Heat wave

Il a fait 37C aujourd'hui... et dans ces cas-là, qu'est-ce-qu'on fait?

On va à la...

Et après l'effort, le réconfort.

It was almost 100F today... and when it's so hot, what happens?
We go to the... [pool].
And some comfort after the effort.

The Big Hole

Les "down":
- avoir oublié la carte-mémoire de l'appareil-photo, donc pas de photos de Las Vegas (enfin, on espère en piquer à nos amis), j'en ai acheté une à Grand Canyon;
- United, qui au lieu de nous faire un check-in online en 2 étapes, nous en met 6 à essayer de soutirer des sous à chaque click (et que je te vends plus d'espace pour les jambes à $24, un pass spécial pour le contrôle de sécurité à $49, et le droit de mettre ton bagage en soute pour $15), c'est super gonflant;
- les 10h de bagnole aller-retour Las Vegas-Grand Canyon en 2 jours: on le savait, mais ça a quand même fait un peu mal;

Les "up":
- gros up pour Tipoulet en général, qui a été super tout le week-end;

- l'upgrade en "suite" au Bally's, très probablement grâce à notre loulou qui a fait du charme à l'hôtesse: la suite faisait 2 fois la taille de notre maison, et Tipoulet est sans aucun doute celui qui en a le plus profité au compteur podomètrique;

- le coaching de GW, notre thésard hyper fort au Black Jack , et les $42 gagnés avec $35 de mise de départ;

- les vues de Grand Canyon, et la rando sur le chemin des mules avec Tipoulet en sac à dos hyper sage;

Here's a brief summary of our trip to Las Vegas and Grand Canyon, because we got to get back to work now ...
The "thumbs down":
- forgetting the memory card from my camera, so no photos from Las Vegas (well, we hope to get some from our friends), but I bought one in Grand Canyon;
- United, which instead of having a 2 -steps online check-in process, has one go through 6 steps trying to get extra cash at each click (more legroom for $24, a special pass for the security check at $49, and bags checked for $15): SO annoying;
- the 10-hours roundtrip car ride from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon in 2 days: we knew it was going to be long, but it was still a bit painful;
- to be questioned-checked on-baby-sit by park rangers 3 times in a row just because yes, we hiked with a baby ...
- the smell of horse-poo almost all along the hike.

The "thumbs up":
- big overall "up" for Tipoulet, who has been great all weekend;
- the upgrade to a "suite
" at Bally's, most likely due to our little one who charmed the hostess; it was twice as big as our house, and Tipoulet is undoubtedly the one who most benefited according to the pedometer;
- the coaching from GW, our Black Jack expert PhD student, and the extra $42 made from a $35 initial bet;
- the views of Grand Canyon, and the hike down the Canyon with a very quiet Tipoulet in his backpack-carrier;
- Tipoulet's first ice cream cone.
It was a great week-end! And it was also a good training for our coming trip to Yellowstone in 2 weeks...

Backyard

The advantage of our current house, besides the fact that it is 5 minutes by bike from our labs, is that it offers two great play areas for Tipoulet: the parking-lot of the Mormon church, and the park behind it.
We have to go there every morning and every evening when returning from work, if we don't want our Tipoulet to get mad at us.
We usually take a ball with us.
On lucky days we see unusual objects on the way.
Once at the park, we start with a little time on the swing.
Sometimes we take a break.
Often we meet dogs, like Gwladys here, and that's just so much fun.
We can dig holes in the sand ...
... and when we're done, we wash our hands before going home.
Alright, that's enough everyday life story for today. Oh and, tomorrow, we're leaving for Las Vegas and Grand Canyon, remember? ...

Have a great weekend!

PS I am a little early (only on this side of the ocean), but Happy Birthday to Mamybelle!

Meat the Carnivores

Alright, I'm not better at puns in English than in French ... But the title is appropriate, since the news of the day is ... that we found where to buy Hanging Tender Steak! Youhou! At the butcher shop in the Stanford Shopping Center, not even too far, unbelievable! Well, actually, they had written "new item" on the label, so, I guess the locals will have to like it for it to stay on the stand ... It was a nice change from our usual Market Steak ...
Note the soundtrack of the video, very classy (I don't know what's gotten into me today).
Tipoulet loved the meat, and it went very well with the french green beans (as labeled on the package) from Trader Joe's.

15 months

Mamina always sends e-cards for Tipoulet's "birthdays". We got one when he turned 6-, 8-, 9-, and 10-month old, and for his first birthday. But the one we received today was unprecedently successful, getting 12 "more" and tons of delighted smiles ...

Giants vs Dodgers

Impec!

We went to a baseball game yesterday at the San Francisco Giants Stadium. The foundation which funds both our labs gave us free tickets, with a $25 gift card. Awesome! It was the first time for me, and the second time that P saw a match. There were a dozen people from my lab, plus 5-6 people from P's lab. I had been told that baseball was boring, well we must have been lucky, because it was a lot of fun. First the stadium is really nice, right on the bay. The weather was lovely and we were fortunately sitting in the shade (I still managed to get slightly sunburnt). You can see the boats pass by. There were kayaks, even. They sit there hoping that they'll catch the balls that fall in the water (which does seem to happen, they have recovered 49 during the hundred or so games, this season). So, it took me 40 minutes out of the 158-minutes game to vaguely understand what it was about. Fortunately, as the action is fairly slow, it allowed time for explanations. By the end of the game I almost had it. Except when they threw me off by putting two dudes on one base, when in fact one was just the first-base coach. How am I supposed to know there is such a thing as a first-base coach?? The slow pace of the game also allowed for eating and drinking, since we had to spend these $ 25 per person anyhow. So with $ 25 at the stadium, you can buy a double cheeseburger, garlic fries and a small Coke (I had never seen such a small cup in the U.S.), a huge Sundae and a bag of sunflower seeds or peanuts ... So much junk food ... But you can do even worse, like P, who apparently enjoyed his Grande Nachos (with hot salsa and melted american cheese) ... Oh, and then the Giants won with a home run in the 10th round! Perfect!

1,2,3,4

Hier, Tipoulet avait 1 an, 2 mois, 3 semaines et 4 jours.

Yesterday, Tipoulet was 1 year, 2 month, 3 week and 4 days-old. I don't count, it's written on my iGoogle page. He's big. Huge. Gigantic. At this pace, next year he's off to college!...
PS on the picture, we're making rice-with-milk (riz-au-lait). He was very interested, and it turned out ok, but we can do better. We need another recipe (from you-know-who-you-are and you have my email)!

9 down, 11 to go

Tipoulet has a cold again. In fact, we think it's his molars coming out. He has a runny nose, is a bit grumpy, bites and shouted yesterday when going to bed. And, Tipoulet never yells when going to bed. He usually dives into the bed, filled with happiness of going to sleep. Seriously.
I called our pediatrician's clinic, and the nurse (they have nurses whose job is to answer parents' phone calls) I talked to told me that according to her book, cold symptoms are not associated with teething, but as a Mom, she thinks it is probably related...
Fortunately, babies have only 20 teeth, which leaves *only* 11 to go... And despite all this, Tipoulet had lots of fun at the pool yesterday!

Quiet week-end

Update of the week:
Tipoulet says a new word: "parc" (playground/park). And he walks alone, Mazel Tov! Even to the park...
Nothing special planned this week-end. We've done two loads of laundry today, so 2-3 more tomorrow and we should be fine. That's if Tipoulet doesn't make everything fall on the ground, obviously... We'll go to the swimming-pool tomorrow, given that it's going to be warm (mid-80F). And in two weeks, we're headed to Las Vegas and Grand Canyon!! We bought our tickets this week.

Wild animals

Last Saturday we went to the Children's Zoo and Museum in Palo Alto, aka "Heaven of the tennis ball", where Mamina had already taken Tipoulet. Obviously, he was incredibely excited. He also liked the animals (bobcat, peacock, raccoon). And Sunday, despite being way behind on household chores, we went to the beach at Half Moon Bay with K, R and AM. The wheather could have been better, and the temperature of the ocean was not more than 15C (more like 4C in my opinion, actually). But the little ones loved it there, and we even saw this. We are now used to the sight of lions, elephants and other big huge whatever seals. But guys with a dorsal fin, it was our first time. We're still debating whether these were killer whales, Minke whales or some kind of porpoises... (you can click on the pictures to make them bigger)

Vocabulary

At 14 months, Tipoulet now knows how to say (and I'll give you only the translation in proper english, for phonetic, see above):
yummy (when he's hungry, and actually since he was 11 months; it was officially his first word), ball (for everything round), Mama, Papa, more, nononono (waving his hand too), bye, shoes, go, water, yuck, woof-woof (dog), maou (cat), and here or this for anything else that he wants from us. Oh, and his first word of German (at least, we think) yesterday: to (for Auto?). If it is, his (german-speaking Swiss) nanny Lucie is going to be proud!
