24 times

As expected, when I was away, the boys went on rides with the Audi, played ball and went to the pool. They also played "throw your lovey", because let's admit it, it's a lot of fun.

Good timing

Michael Jackson just died of a heart-attack, ok, everybody knows that, but where did he die of his heart-attack?...
...
Two blocks away from my room at UCLA!! So exciting... So I went, there was not much to see, as you'll notice, but I still took a couple of pictures to do my share of photo-reporting.
And a colleague of my friend's roommate did CPR on Michael... Gee, it's a small world...

Off to a meeting...

Début de journée, le premier biberon/Start of the day, first bottle

Fin de journée, avant d'aller se coucher/End of the day, before going to bed.

I am off to a meeting tomorrow morning, and coming back on Sunday. The guys are going to be on their own, playing ball, driving the Audi, and maybe going to the pool this week-end to fight the heat... For complaints on the blog (and lack of updates thereof), please contact P.

Father's Day

PapaChick got a new car for Father's Day... I liked our old wagon as well, but apparently I don't know crap about cars!
Tipoulet seems to like his new car too, the radio in particular (for full disclosure, it was broken in our old car).

"Macarons are the next cupcake"

Discloser: This is a very low-Tipoulet post.
While Mamina was here, we didn't just have fun, we also worked hard in the kitchen ... Here is the result of an attempt to lemon macarons (and not macaroons): Not bad, huh? We were quite proud, especially since we knew we had a long way to go. For Christmas, Mamina gave me Pierre's book, and we tried to make the chocolate macarons... Let the picture speak for itself. It was not really Pierre's fault, since we did not even follow the recipe that precisely, and our equipment was far from adequate... But since then, I took a private lesson with Fred, the other King of the Macaron, I bought a digital scale, and Pierre's my buddy again!
PS the title is a quote from a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle on macarons.

Growth chart

Tipoulet is obviously growing very fast, and so far he was measured regularly at the pediatrician. Since these visits are going to be less frequent, we wanted to find a growth chart to continue measuring him, and as we will probably move in a not so distant future, we wanted something that we could take with us. We found this little gadget, designed in France actually... We got the one in inches, and for every inch, there is room for a small picture taken in the corresponding time period. Cool, don't you think?
Anyway, I'm very happy with my purchase...
We are often told that Tipoulet is tall for his age, especially in France. However, according to the measures taken by our pediatrician, he seems to fall more into the bottom third of the growth curve.
Two possibilities, not mutually exclusive, though:
1) a large head throws people off?
It is highly probable, but it's a little weird to say "no, no, he's not tall, he just has a big head," you must admit ...
2) the U.S. curve is not representative of the french population?
Well I went to check the growth charts for both countries, and sure enough, American babies are apparently larger than French babies! The line for the french 50th percentile (the median, 50% of children are smaller, 50% are larger) follows that of the american 25th percentile (25% below, 75% above) ... In other words, 75% of American babies are bigger than the median french baby ... There are about 2 pounds of difference between the american and french medians: on 20-lbs babies, it's almost a 10% difference... Crazy.
And american babies are not even fed Frappuccino's...

Bye-bye Mamina!

It is already time to go home for Mamina ... It was great to have her with us during these two weeks!
Tipoulet obviously had a lot of fun (fully documented by pictures and videos taken by Mamina).
However, it looks like we might not feed this child enough, because when a Mom drops Cheerios (children's cereal) in the sand at the playground, here's what happens.
Apparently, Cheerios are also popular to potty train little boys. It goes without saying that we won't try it...

And a beach movie too

I had forgotten to add the movie...

Pescadero beach

Tipoulet avait presque 6 mois.

Last Saturday we went to the ocean at Pescadero State Beach, south of Half Moon Bay. We had already been to this beach with Grandpa Jacky and Grandma Dany last November.
Tipoulet was almost 6 months. He already stared at everything back then ... but wasn't very mobile.
This time he had a blast. Barefeet in the water, mouth and hands full of sand ... He even returned to these old Hawaiian habits of his of dipping his cookies in sand: it must really taste better!

Newsflash

Breaking news: Tipoulet takes his first steps alone.
Until yesterday, Tipoulet had stubbornly refused to let go of our hands to walk, and preferred to fall down rather than to go forward alone. As Mamina puts it, the body was ready, it was on the mind that we needed to work ...
Yesterday morning, when he was proudly holding a new ball in each hand (we'll come back to his passion for balls later), he probably thought he was secured, and hop, six steps alone! And he took four more in the grass at a party with friends in the afternoon... Oh boy!...
NB: The picture is from the day before ...
NB2: and the first steps happened on (French) Mother's Day, too... Tipoulet's the best!

Tipoulet's week with Mamina

Tipoulet's nanny is on vacation for two weeks, so as you know, Mamina came to take over the baby patrol. It sounds like they had a blast together this past week. On the program, plenty of trips to the park, the Children's Zoo and Museum in Palo Alto (where Tipoulet particularly loved the ball-throwing toy thing), sessions of musical buggy in the backyard. And to celebrate the end of this exhausting week, we went for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory on Friday night: big burgers, fries and even a slice of Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Cheesecake to share between the three of us. Actually, more like between the four of us, because Tipoulet had a very generous serving of whipped cream, as you'll see!

Tipoulet's rss feed

Alright, let's continue with technical stuff, since we're at it. Has everybody personalized his/her Goggle page? It's quite neat, this allows you to be automatically notified of updates to this blog (and many other sites that interest you) via your Google Reader.
So to create a Google Reader, click on "Add gadgets" in the top right corner of your personalized Google page, type "Google Reader" in the search box. Click "Add" under the first gadget that appears in the list. If you now go back to your homepage (link in the top left corner of the same page), you'll find a Google Reader. If you are already registered as a Follower on this blog, the updates should now appear in this box (the old posts should also appear the first time). If you are not a follower, you can also click on the Google reader link in right-hand-sidebar of the blog, it does the same thing...
Voila! It doesn't make sense? Post a comment ...
Alright, you've been good readers, so here's a picture for you...

Bilingual Tipoulet

(By starting) When I started this blog, I obviously asked myself in what language I was going to write (ing) it. French? This would be the easiest for me, for family and friends (to) for whom it is primarily intended, but almost none of our friends here (do not include) understand French ... English, then? Most people around us speak, or at least read English. But not all of them. The two languages in parallel, so ... (How hard is the job twice) Holy cow, it's going to be twice as much work - I thought, before (to) discovering online translators. (To hell) Awesome! Almost no corrections (in small print) to do. I (leave you to judge) will let you see for yourselves.

À comparer avec la traduction de Yahoo!:
By beginning this blog, I obviously wondered in which language j' went l' to write. French? It would be simplest for me, the family and the friends for whom it is mainly intended, but almost none of our friends here includes/understands French… English, then? The majority of people around us speak, or at least read l' English. But not all. Two languages in parallel, therefore… Which galère, c' of job - thought I am the double, jusqu' to discover the translators online. D' hell! Not of corrections to be almost made. I leave you judges.
Seriously? Apparently it has a pretty big issue with the ' key, among others...

Celui-ci n'est pas mal non plus, sinon...

Sunday at the zoo

et le gros lion (intérêt réciproque apparemment);

On Sunday, we did not let the wintery temperatures of San Francisco (60 º F, versus 77 º C in Palo Alto) scare us and took Mamina (and Tipoulet) to the zoo. Well, it was worth it! Tipoulet loved the giraffes, penguins, the lights in the underpath and the big lion (there was apparently mutual interest there); Mamina had a weakness for the peacocks (local equivalent of the Parisian pigeon or the Palo altan squirrel) and giraffes. We also had typical American foods for lunch: popcorn and french fries only, Tipoulet loved it.
It was a great day overall! We will go back, but this time in summertime (ie November-December in San Francisco)...
