Yellowstone and Grand Teton - Day 2.2

Alors, nous disions donc qu'à l'heure de la sieste (3h de sieste, quand même, il avait du retard de sommeil de la veille, le loulou!), nous nous sommes dirigés au nord, vers Mammoth, où nous avions prévu de passer la deuxième nuit.

Très mignon, Mammoth, pas de monde du tout, on était tranquille!



On y a croisé la voiture rétro du parc.



Et de là, on est parti visiter les Mammoth Hot Springs, juste à côté.









Les grands ont trouvé ça magnifique, et Minus a eu plein de marches à monter et descendre donc tout le monde a passé un bon moment!



Puis assez rapidement, il a été 17h, l'heure à laquelle on peut espérer voir les animaux réapparaître, donc on est reparti en direction de l'entrée est du parc, vers les vallées à loups et antilopes de Lamar Valley...



On a recroisé la voiture du parc, et Tipoulet a pu dire bye-bye à tous les passagers.



Les antilopes, ok fait!




Pour les loups, je pense qu'on aurait pu en voir si on avait eu des jumelles dignes de ce nom... Je me fie principalement à l'excitation des 30 personnes groupées sur la petite colline à côté de nous pour dire ça, parce qu'on ne peut malheureusement pas tirer grand-chose de ma photo.



Mais pour vous convaincre que l'on peut voir des loups à cet endroit, j'ai emprunté une photo d'amis partis à Yellowstone le week-end précédent.



Pas mal, hein?

So we were saying that at nap time (a 3-hour nap too, Loulou probably had to catch up on sleep from the day before!), we were heading north to Mammoth, where we had planned to spend the second night.
Mammoth is a very cute little town, no one's there, it was so relaxing!
We saw the old-fashioned Yellowstone car parked there.
And then we went to check out the Mammoth Hot Springs, just nearby.
The grownups found it beautiful, and Shorty had a lot of stairs to climb and go down, so everyone had a good time!
Then pretty soon it was 5pm, the time when we can expect to see animals reappear, so we drove towards the east entrance of the park, hoping to spot wolves and pronghorns in Lamar Valley ...
We met the Yellowstone car again and Tipoulet could say bye-bye to all the passengers.
Antelopes, check!
For wolves, I think we could have seen some had we had some decent binoculars... I rely mainly on the 30 extremelly excited people standing on the small hill next to us to say this, because we unfortunately can not infer much from my picture.
But to show you that one can see wolves at this location, I borrowed a picture from friends who just went to Yellowstone the weekend before.
Not bad, eh?

Off to bed

Bon, finalement, on n'avait plus rien à manger, il fallait donc faire des courses ce soir, et puis il fallait aussi que je retourne au labo, donc j'ai plus le courage de Yellowstoner maintenant... Ça attendra demain... mais pour la peine, je vous ai mis du son.

Well, actually, there was nothing left to eat, so we had to go grocery shopping tonight and I also had to go back to lab, so I don't feel like Yellowstoning anymore now ... It will wait until tomorrow ... but I've added some sound instead.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton - Day 2

Le deuxième jour, on a commencé par une petite randonnée aux chutes Upper and Lower Falls le long de la Yellowstone River. Comme c'était juste à côté de notre hôtel à Canyon Village et que le plus tôt le matin tu te ballades, le plus d'animaux sauvages tu vois, on y est même allé avant le petit-déj'.






Et on a donc vu des animaux sauvages.




On avait évidemment emporté un petit snack de Cheerios pour Tipoulet qui a faim toutes les 2 heures quoiqu'il arrive, mais encore plus après une rando (même si c'est pas lui qui porte!)...



Ensuite, on s'est dirigé vers l'ouest pour aller voir des geysers.



Première pause à Porcelain Basin et au Steamboat Geyser.




Seconde à Artists Painpots.




Sur le chemin, on a croisé quelques autres animaux sauvages.



De la taille qui peut impressionner un conducteur (en l'occurence, moi, sur la photo ci-dessous)...



... et causer un embouteillage.



On a aussi aperçu un coyote trop occupé à chasser des rongeurs pour se préoccuper des voitures arrêtées sur le bas-côté.



Et là, tout à coup, je réalise qu'on en est qu'à l'heure de la sieste et au point B du plan, que j'ai encore plein de trucs à raconter et de photos à trier pour cette deuxième journée, et donc je reprendrai demain... si vous êtes sages.



On the second day we started with a short hike to Upper and Lower Falls along the Yellowstone River. SInce it was close to our hotel in Canyon Village, and the earliest you hike, the more animals you see, we even went before breakfast.
And indeed we saw some wild life.
We had obviously taken a small snack of Cheerios for Tipoulet who's hungry every 2 hours no matter what, but even more so after a hike (even if he is not the one carrying the load!)...
Then we headed west to go see some geysers.
First stop at Porcelain Basin and Steamboat Geyser.
Second stop at Artists Painpots.
On the way we ran into some more wild animals.
Of a size that can impress a driver (in this case, me on the photo below) ...
... and cause a traffic jam.
We also saw a coyote who was too busy hunting rodents to worry about the cars that had pulled over.
And suddenly I realize that I have only reached nap time and location B on the map so far, and I still have lots of things to say and pictures to go through from this second day, so I will resume tomorrow ... if you are nice.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton - Day 1

On est donc allé aux parcs de Yellowstone et Grand Teton pour un week-end prolongé de Labor Day. On a pris l'avion jusqu'à Jackson Hole, avec escale à Salt Lake City, et loué une voiture là-bas. Le vol Salt Lake City-Jackson Hole de 30 minutes nous a épargné plus de 5h de route, ce qui après notre week-end à Grand Canyon, a été grandement apprécié. En plus, les billets d'avion étaient payés avec les miles gagnés via nos cartes de crédit, alors pourquoi se priver, je vous le demande?



On a atterri vers 14h30, ce qui nous laissait presqu'une demi-journée de ballade. Jackson Hole se trouve à la limite sud du parc de Grand Teton, que l'on a donc traversé pour rejoindre notre premier hotel, à Canyon Village, dans Yellowstone.



Yellowstone est le plus connu des deux parcs, mais je connais beaucoup de gens qui lui préfèrent Grand Teton, pour ses arrière-plans montagneux.



Alors que P et moi nous sommes régalés des paysages, Tipoulet a évidemment plutôt profité de tout ce qui était à portée de main, type cailloux ou herbes...




Il a d'ailleurs découvert le jeter de caillou dans l'eau, un grand hit du voyage!



On a fait pas mal de route sur les 4 jours, et Tipoulet a bien pris le rythme des siestes dans la voiture, heureusement pour tout le monde...



Les premiers animaux rencontrés, dans Yellowstone, ont été de jeunes wapitis. Ils font partie des animaux les plus communs à Yellowstone (après les bisons, quand même), mais bon, fallait bien commencer quelque part...



Et puis on a vu nos premiers bisons aussi...

We went to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks for a long Labor Day weekend. We flew to Jackson Hole, with a stopover in Salt Lake City, and rented a car there. The Salt Lake City-Jackson Hole flight, which lasts about 30 minutes, saved us 5h of driving, which after our weekend in Grand Canyon, was greatly appreciated. And the airline tickets were paid for with miles earned on our credit cards anyway...
We landed at around 2:30pm, which left us almost a half-day to enjoy. Jackson Hole is located at the southern entrance of Grand Teton, which we drove through to reach our first hotel, at Canyon Village in Yellowstone.
Yellowstone is the most famous of the two parks, but I know many people who prefer the Grand Teton, for its magnificient mountainous backgrounds.
While P and I really enjoyed the scenery, Tipoulet obviously had much more fun with everything within reach, such as pebbles or grass ...
He also discovered how to throw pebbles in the water, a big hit of the trip!
We did quite a bit of driving these last 4 days, and Tipoulet quickly adjusted to napping in the car, fortunately for everyone ...
The first animals we saw in Yellowstone were young elks. They are among the most common animals in Yellowstone (after the bisons, though), but hey, we had to start somewhere ...
And then we saw our first buffalos ...
