It's still making the headlines here, and French news also reported the shooting that occured in Arizona last Saturday, which targeted a member of Congress, who remains in intensive care today, killed 6 people and injured 12 others.
The day after the shooting, our friends GW and K were at home, and we obviously spent most of our time talking about what had just happened. GW was particularly shocked that a politician had been the target of the shooter. It is the first time this has happened in the U.S. since the assassination attempt of Reagan in the early 80s. As for me, frankly, I was surprised to learn that no politician had been killed in more than 30 years. Because not a week goes by without the local news reporting a shooting, and with 10,000 casualties of firearms annually in the U.S., why not a politician, in fact?
The shooting of Tucson was the act of an apparently mentally unstable young man, who was able to buy a gun in one of the most permissive state in the matter. In Arizona, any person without a criminal record or medical records showing mental illness (conditions required by the federal government) can own a gun. And an extended magazine, for more than 30 ammunition, as used last Saturday, which was illegal in this country between 1994 and 2004, and still is today in California. The guy could shoot 30 bullets before being tackled when he stopped to reload.
So in the last week, we've been hearing a little about passing tougher regulations on firearms, but without any real hope that this will really happen. New York Representative Carolyn McCarthy, who herself lost her husband when a gunman opened fire on subway passengers in 1993, announced she would propose a ban on large-capacity magazines. It is not even clear that this law has a chance in Congress. Note, I can imagine that it is sometimes convenient to have a one of these extended magazine. For example, I'm sure the GIGN uses it all the time. But honestly, for the average idiot here, I have my doubts ...
And so, here we are again, like each time such a massacre occurs (Columbine, Virginia Tech ...), and voices are raised to reinforce gun control, the same flawed arguments are made again and again. Here are my two "favorite" ones:
"If the victims had had a weapon, they could have stopped the shooter."
And indeed, sales of Glock 19, the weapon used in Tucson, have apparently been doing great in Arizona the last 8 days.
"It's not the gun that kills, it's the person behind it."
But then again, the same person behind a knife or bare hands does far less damage ...

During the "Holiday break"

Even though we didn't really take a vacation during the holidays, we took advantage of holidays to do some cool stuff with Mamina. Because here, the holidays are given during the week when they fall on a weekend day. For example, we did not worked Thursday 23th and Friday 24th. Not like in France, where this year, half of the holidays are apparently disappearing. Mamina will tell you: "I don't care, in May, I am retired," and us: "Who cares, anyway, we work 90% of time on holidays" (not so true anymore since Tipoulet arrived, though). Back to Santa's reindeer, I was saying that we still did some cool stuff while Mamina was visiting.
1) visit the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Tipoulet loved it. But I lost the pictures. At least, until further notice, since I'll try the ultimate hard-drive rescue tomorrow.
2) walk at the Año Nuevo Elephant Seals Reserve , always nice. It was the beginning of the season, so there were not a lot of animals. For pictures, also lost, check those from last year, which are much better anyway.
3) Diane Reeves concert at Yoshi's in SF, for Mamina and me. Well there, we couldn't take pictures anyway. It was awesome. Diane Reeves was spectacular, as always, and we had great seats. As P says, we could "see her nose hair", which she did not have, but it gives you an idea. In addition, we enjoyed some delicious sushi during the concert.
4) the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at SF MOMA, also cool, not too horribly crowded. We wanted to see the Impressionists at the De Young, but it was sold out. Fortunately, they later extended their opening hours and we managed to get tickets for next week. As for Mamina, she will go to the Musée d'Orsay when she is retired ... The Cartier-Bresson exhibit was nice too, so no regrets, and Tipoulet loved certain "details", particularly the bead curtain at the entrance. And, we ate at a great Dim Sum restaurant (I used to call them just "Cantonese steamed bites" before coming to California) before the exhibit, Yank Sing. Tipoulet loved it as well, probably because of the chopsticks and the dim sum-carts. He also didn't do too bad, thanks to his harpoon technique. In summary, we did pretty good, considering the terrible weather during the time Mamina was here...

Christmas Tree Lane

I finally uploaded the pictures I took last week on my new hard-drive. So before they become completely outdated, I'll show you the ones from Palo Alto's Christmas Tree Lane, that we only discovered this year.
According to their website, the tradition of decorating the entire street during the month of December began in the 1940's. The residents agreed to light small Christmas trees with electric garlands all along the street.
The decorations, most of them in painted plywood, were built and added over the years by residents.
For instance, Santa climbing the chimney, who was the first of its kind to appear, arrived in 1947.
And these Wise Men, built in 1970, are apparently the work of the 15-year old son of a neighborhood family... Not bad, huh?
And the scene at this house, I don't know when it was made, but it looked amazing !
I almost forgot this last one: it almost looks like the Galeries Lafayette (parisian department store well-known for its Christmas decorations), doesn't it ?
Of course, the majority of these houses have changed owners since the 1940's, but the decorations are passed onto the new residents, and the tradition has been kept alive. And most of the residents join in. Plus, since houses in the neighborhood are usually really pretty, a "tiny bit" of light makes them look gorgeous...

Technical report
So, I was saying that my laptop was down again...
Everything started last month. I had brought my computer to the Apple Store for repair, and it came back with, amongst other things, a new Logic Board. Don't ask me what that is, I don't know anything about computers. Anyway, as a result, the identity of my computer was changed, and Time Machinme did not recognize my old back-ups as from this computer, so would not delete them to make room for a new back-up, and my external hard-drive was too full for a new back-up. So I went back to the Apple Store to ask them for advice.
"Install the new OS (Snow Leopard) and that will take care of it", they told me.
So, because I'm a nice compliant person, I went and bought the new OS. And on Tuesday night, I installed it. Except that at the end of the installation, instead of restarting, the computer got stuck. And since then, I can't get it to restart. It stays on the grey screen, with the apple (that turns into a "prohibited" sign after a few mninutes).
Back to the Apple Store again 3 days ago, where they told me that they thought my hard drive had died. Yeah right, precisely the minute I install OS 10.6. They offered to waive the cost of a new hard drive, so that's nice. But I lost 2 months worth of pictures on the old one (fortunately no work data)...
If there are some geeks out there, please come forward, I'll be delighted to hear what you think about it !

Happy New Year ! (and computer down again)
Just a quick note to wish everyone a great New Year's eve and a Happy New Year !
My laptop is misbehaving again since Tuesday (I'll tell you more about it later), so that's all for today...

(Belated) Merry Christmas !

Canard et légumes rôtis, Madiran - Roasted duck and vegetables, Madiran

Montagne de cadeaux pour Tipoulet - Mountain of presents for Tipoulet
Joyeux Noël à tous !

We were very reasonable with the menu last night, but not so much for Tipoulet's presents from Santa ("Father Christmas" in french) in the morning... He almost gave up on opening his two last presents ("Papa open the gifts"). It might be that online shopping makes things worse, because you don't really get a sense of all the volume. Let's hope that we'll remember next year...

Pink it is !
* ils se reconnaîtront.
So it will be a girl this time !
I didn't really have any preference one way or the other, since the only combination that I found intimidating, "girls only", was out of the picture right away when Tipoulet was born... Mind you, I have nothing against girls, it's just that having grown up surrounded by boys (3 brothers and 2 male cousins), I would have found myself on unfamiliar grounds.
People's reaction was pretty interesting. As I mentioned, 10 out of 11 had bet on a girl, and when some thought (they misunderstood) that I was expecting a second boy, I saw fear (I'm only slightly exagerating) on their face...
In any case, we're very excited (we'd have been excited for a boy as well). But I'll just point out now, for our layette providers (thank you, thank you, thank you!!), that pink not being my favorite color, it's not going to be a walk in the park.
PS as I was just reminded, in french, to have a boy, and then a girl, is referred to as "the king's choice": you first want to get a heir for the crown, and then extend the kingdom by marrying a daughter wisely. It's really exactly us...
* they'll know who they are.

* ils se reconnaîtront.
