More beach fun

Yeah, the photos got vintage-ized. Well, it's just that my laptop was, well, sort of left behind at the SFO security check - I know, I know, but they screened my backpack 3 TIMES - and so I had to download a photo editing app for my iPad until I get it back. And I'm playing around a little...

Hikes and snorkels

Our first days in St John have met our wildest expectations. Between the beaches and the pool, the kids spend their entire time in the water, and they love it... Considering how much there is to do, and see, that's understandable, though...
We've already met our third see turtle, for instance. Crazy!! I think I'll keep all the other underwater pics for a special post at the end...
OK, except for these ones: Tipoulet, who went snorkeling for the first time last year in Mexico before he knew how to swim, is now a real pro at it!
On the third day, we managed to convince the kiddos to go for a hike in the tropical forest, which thankfully was filled with lizards and other fascinating creatures...

Hints

Alright, I'll give you a few hints. So we are in the Caribbean, but - because the visa in my passport had expired and I couldn't leave the country - we're still in the US.
Second hint, we're 5 minutes away from a national park.
Third hint, it's amazingly beautiful, as you can see.

Play date

Yesterday Tipoulet had a playdate with two girlfriends from his class. So I picked up two more children than usual from daycare and took the little summer camp crowd home. Tipoulet was super excited to show them his room and all his toys. But there was a little tension when he proudly took out his collection of small cars, and they didn't seem interested at all... Instead, the girls started to go through a sticker book that Tipoulet had barely noticed in the last two months. Fearing the impasse and listening only to my inner child's instinct, I pulled out the bucket of Playmobils... and let the magic happen.
If I hadn't had to take care of my daughter, I would probably have joined them ...
It was the last play date before our vacation next week, and his entering Kindergarten mid-August.

Cronut

I spent the week doing a genetic screen, which basically means I spent most of my time on a microscope. It's pretty boring, so to entertain myself, I've been listening to recent NPR podcasts that had piled up on my phone. Well, it turns out I learned some stuff, now I know what the latest it-food is: the cronut. The cronut - which I had never heard of - is a hybrid between a croissant and a doughnut and was created by a New-York bakery. They were saying that people start lining up in front of the bakery at 6 am, 2 hours before it opens, to get their hands on a cronut (technically, 2, that's the limit). And the cronut apparently generates an outrageous number - I forgot how many - of hits on Twitter every day.
I knew I wasn't really cool, but now I feel like there's a canyon separating me from cool... Are there any other people out there who had never heard of a cronut, or who couldn't care less?

Yearly patriotic picture

Joyeux 14 Juillet!

In contrast to our compatriots from France, we're happy when Bastille Day falls on a week-end. Because then we have more time to do something special. This morning I told Tipoulet that the tradition was to dress in blue, white and red, today. After all, Americans dress in green for St Patrick every year, so why not?
In order to enjoy the warm weather and get a nice background for our yearly picture, we headed to the Foothills Park. And then, it was time for another barbecue (because, really, the Americans got this one right), and a very french-looking summer tart.
Happy Bastille Day!
