We'd like to think that Tipoulet inherited the cleanliness gene from his 2 grandmothers. Most likely, he's just the typical toddler that toys manufacturers have in mind. But if that's the case, we'd rather he uses the real thing, that saves Roomba some work...

Yea for the Public Option, Nay for Abortion Rights
Bon, d'abord, réjouissons-nous, le projet de loi de réforme du système de santé américain, qui inclue la création d'une assurance publique, est passé ce week-end à la Chambre des Représentants. Je me réjouis.
Mais pourquoi fallait-il qu'ils me gâchent le plaisir en passant également l'amendement Stupak (du nom du Représentant qui l'a proposé, Démocrate de son État du Michigan). Cet amendement prévoit de rendre impossible l'utilisation de fonds publics pour couvrir des avortements électifs (de grossesse ne résultant pas de viol, d'inceste ou ne mettant pas la vie de la patiente en danger).
Cette règle, déjà édictée par l'amendement Hyde depuis 1976, s'appliquerait cependant de manière encore plus stricte: avec Hyde, les plans d'assurance pouvaient séparer les fonds fédéraux des autres (des États - par exemple, pour Medicaid qui couvre les pauvres et est financé à la fois par les États et par l'état fédéral -, ou des fonds privés - j'imagine pour les employés fédéraux, par exemple). Avec l'amendement Stupak, toute femme touchant des aides fédérales pour payer son assurance-santé, ou utilisant l'option publique, ne pourra pas utiliser ses propres deniers pour une couverture-avortement. Magnifique!
Ce qui m'énerve le plus dans tout ça, outre le fait que bon, ils devraient savoir maintenant que restreindre l'accès à l'avortement ne fait pas baisser les statistiques*, c'est que l'amendement soit passé avec le soutien de 64 Démocrates!! 64!!!! Il en fallait 46 pour atteindre la majorité. (Sans surprise, aucun Républicain n'a voté contre l'amendement).
Il y a encore espoir que cet amendement ne figure pas dans la version finale de la loi (par exemple, s'il n'est pas adopté au Sénat).
Et le plus beau, c'est la répartition des votes selon les sexes.
Selon mes calculs**:
- 20% des Démocrates sont des femmes
25% (62) des hommes Démocrates ont voté pour l'amendement
3% des femmes Démocrates (2) ont fait de même.
On pourrait protester que les États plus progressistes ont plus de chance d'élire une femme, elle même progressiste.
Sauf que:
- En Ohio, par exemple, 10 des Représentants de l'État sont Démocrates
5 hommes sur 6 (83%) ont voté pour l'amendement.
1 femme sur 4 (25%) a fait de même.
Si on avait comptabilisé les votes des femmes seulement, l'amendement aurait été rejeté par une majorité de 74%. 74%.
Mais moi je dis, les mecs, mélez-vous de vos utérus!!!!!

This amendment would make it impossible to use public funds to cover elective abortions (for pregnancies not resulting from rape, incest or not putting the life of the patient at risk).
This rule, already enacted by the Hyde Amendment in 1976, however, would apply even more stringently: with Hyde, the insurance plans would separate federal funds from other sources (the States' - for example, Medicaid covers the poor and is financed by both states and the federal state - or private money - I guess for federal employees, for example). With the Stupak amendment, all women receiving federal aid to pay for health insurance, or using the public option, could not even use their own money for abortion-coverage. Beautiful!
What pisses me off most about all this, besides the fact that please, they should know by now that restricting access to abortion does not reduce it*, is that the amendment be passed with the support of 64 Democrats! 64!!!!! They needed 46 votes to reach the majority. (Not surprisingly, no Republican voted against the amendment).
There is still hope that this amendment will not appear in the final version of the law (for instance, if not approved by the Senate).
And the best part is the breakdown of votes by gender.
According to my calculations**:
- 20% of Democrat Representatives are women
25% (62) male Democrats voted for the amendment.
3% of female Democrats (2) did the same.
One might object that more progressive states are more likely to elect a woman, herself a progressive.
Except that:
- In Ohio, for example, 10 Representatives are Democrats

Had we only taken into account votes from women in the House, the amendment would have been killed by a majority of 74%. 74%.

Moi: Si, j'en ai changé récemment parce que je n'aimais pas la précédente, elle voulait me faire faire un tas de trucs inutiles. Mais j'aime bien le nouveau, Dr P. Il n'a pas de technicien, il fait les détartrages lui-même, et il n'essaye pas de te poser une couronne pour le plaisir.

An uncle accross the bay
Dimanche dernier, nous avons eu la visite de Tonton J, qui passe 2 semaines dans une famille d'accueil adorable de l'autre côté du Dumbarton Bridge. On a passé un après-midi très sympa, avec déjeûner au soleil et visite de Stanford (et petit tour du labo au passage). J et ses potes m'ont même donné un coup de main avec les manips!!!
Last Sunday Uncle J visited, while staying for 2 weeks on the other side of the Dumbarton bridge with a great family. We had a very nice time, with a lunch outside and a tour of Stanford (with a short visit to the lab). J and his buddies even helped me with some experiments!!

Dans notre entourage, comme relevé dans les commentaires, on a plutôt fait dans l'animalier pour Halloween. Mais on avait du choix. Je vous ai trouvé quelques exemples de déguisements qu'on n'a pas choisis cette année (ni l'année dernière, et que sans doute on ne choisira pas l'année prochaine).

The wild wild bear
Et voilà les photos tant attendues du Tipoulet d'Halloween.
Bon, il a un peu rouspété quand même sur la partie haute du costume.
Surtout quand ça l'empêchait d'aller jouer dans la piscine à boules avec son pote le singe N.
Mais finalement, c'était pas si compliqué de lui faire garder son chapeau d'ours: il suffisait que ses 2 mains soient occupées.
À s'accrocher à la poussette qui roule à fond la caisse.
À biduler le camion-trotteur.
À attraper les balles qui traînent.
À manger.
À faire le malin au volant de sa décapotable pour impressioner les coccinelles (AM sur la photo).
Et à cavaler jusqu'à la nuit tombée...

Well, he protested a little about the top part of the costume.
Especially when it kept him from going to play in the ball pool with his buddy the monkey N.
But ultimately, it was not so complicated to make him keep his bear hat: he just had to have both hands busy. Holding onto the stroller rolling at full speed. Playing with the wheeled toys. Catching the balls lying around. Eating. Driving his convertible to impress the ladybugs passing by (AM in photo). And riding until dusk ...
