1) P est dans l'avion Air France pour Paris, pour le boulot;
This post is appropriate for 2 reasons today.
1) P is on the Air France flight to Paris for a business trip;
2) this adventure came to an end, I hope, this afternoon.
But because it's already 3 pages long, I won't put a french translation...
08/24/2011:
"Hi,
No miles have been credited to my account for my flight from SFO to CDG on 06/xx/2011. My Delta eticket number is 006xxxxxxx. In addition, because the flight was 9 hours late, I would appreciate some compensation for the inconvenience. Thank you for taking care of this.
Best regards,
MamaChick"

"Dear Miss MamaChick,
Thank you for contacting Flying Blue.
Thank you very much for your e-mail dated August 24th 2011.
Please note that since July 2, 2007, missing Miles for AIR FRANCE or KLM flights must be claimed directly via the "Flying Blue" section of the www.airfrance.com or www.klm.com
Your ticket number, which appears on your paper or electronic ticket, will be required for that transaction. It begins with 057... for Air France and with 074... for KLM.
For flights with other partners, a copy of your ticket and the original boarding pass should be sent to the following address:
FLYING BLUE
235 King Street East
Kitchener, ON
N2G 4N5
CANADA
To ensure that Miles are credited to your account automatically, please remember to give your Flying Blue account number every time you make a reservation with AIR FRANCE, KLM or other Flying Blue partner.
We thank you for your continued loyalty to the Flying Blue programme.
Sincerely,
Sara
Your Flying Blue Team"
09/02/2011:
"Here's the thing:
1) I booked my ticket ON THE PHONE WITH AIR FRANCE, who had my Flying Blue number (since the return-leg of the flight was actually credited, after all);
2) but, I got a Delta ticket issued to me, so no 057... or 074... eticket number, thus I can't claim the miles online.
3) I have no time and no intention of sending you the original boarding pass.
So please, for once, Flying Blue Customer Service, be helpful.
MamaChick"
09/09/2011:

09/09/2011:
"This is my 3rd email. Please check your records for my previous emails on Aug 24th, and Sept 2nd, and your responses on Sept 2nd and 9th.
[COPY of previous email]"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME !?!!?
You'll notice that in addition to being incompetent, they only reply to emails once a week apparently.
09/20/2011:
After 3 painful, very painful phone calls to Flying Blue - where I was arguing that since they were responsible for the mistake, they were the ones who should fix it -, 2 to Air France Customer Service, I finally ended up talking to Delta Customer Service, who, BECAUSE THEY'RE AMERICANS, know what a Customer Service is supposed to look like.
Me: "Hi, I have a problem with some miles that were not credited to my Flying Blue account for a flight with Air France with a Delta eticket."
Her: "Oh, well, then you need to call..."
Me: "NO! I talked to Flying Blue, they told me they couldn't help me, and to call Air France Customer Service, which I did, but THEY told me they couldn't help either and gave me your number. This is my 6th phone call today, please help me or I'm going to lose it."
Her: "Oh my! They've really had you on a roll here... I am sorry, let me see what I can do to help you. [I explain the situation, pause] OK, I talked to my supervisor, and he agrees with me, it's not acceptable, I am going to call them RIGHT NOW and they're going to hear it from me if they don't want to credit your miles. [pause] Alright Ms MamaChick, I just had them on the phone, please fax them the email with your eticket and they'll credit your account within 48 hours."
Fax sent today, I'll update the post in a couple of days.
Thank you Delta Customer Service, I love you ! And Sara, Javier, Renata and the 2 morons I had on the phone today at Flying Blue Customer Service, !@#$ you.

Monterey & Big Sur - Part V (and last): Tipoulet's favorites

And here's an exhausted Tipoulet
You probably won't find it in guidebooks, but one of Tipoulet's favorite things in Monterey was the Dennis the Menace park. I have to say it is a pretty awesome park. And not too crowded as you can see. Plus, there are even more things than shown in the picture. Like a train engine that kids can climb on.
Still, despite all of this, after 45 minutes, we found our little climber... in a tree ! The other thing that Tipoulet loved was the pool at the hotel. And to our delight, he started swimming on his own again - he had become afraid of being on his own in the water lately - putting his head under the water.

Tribute in light - Hommage en lumière

After two days of listening to NPR, to all this pain, to all this grief, tonight, I kissed my own two little Americans a bit longer.
* "We are all Americans !" was written by Colombani in an OpEd piece in Le Monde 10 years ago.

Pacified

Eh ben,
1) c'est pas vous qui vous faites machouillez le sein depuis 3 mois et demi;
2) ça fait touche-silence (c'est comme ça qu'on dit "mute button" en français ?);

Major breakthrough, La Poulette finally figured out how to use a pacifier. She used to spit it right back whenever you tried to put it in her mouth, which was quite funny to see, actually.
How is this a breakthrough, you may ask...
Well,
1) you're not the one whose boob has been chewed on for the last 15 weeks;
2) it is a very effective mute button;
3) it gave us the chance to use our plan B at night, which involves giving her the pacifier instead of the breast when she wakes up at 4am. Report on the third night: 7 hours of sleep in a row, a first.
You're the best, my angel !
Update: 4th night, 9 hours and still sleeping... :)

Monterey & Big Sur - Part IV: The coast

Devant... - In front of us...

et derrière - and behind us

Hang in there guys, I think there will be only one post left on our Monterey week-end after this one.
Today, the coast, with Big Sur and the 17 Mile Drive, you'll see, it's very pretty.
We took advantage of the fact that the chicken were sleeping in the back of the car to drive down to the McWay falls, in the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, about 1h 1/2 south of Monterey.
A wonder of the californian coast that is definitely worth the drive.
We then headed back north, to spend the afternoon at Pfeiffer Beach.
It's a gorgeous beach, with purple sand, surrounded by beautiful cliffs.
Everybody enjoyed their favorite activities: sea shells hunt for P and Tipoulet, and farniente for La Poulette and myself.
The next day, before we drove back to Palo Alto, we took a little detour through the 17 Mile Drive, between Carmel and Monterey. The coast is gorgeous there too.
And because it was low tide, some people had a blast.
We ended the ride by visiting the most famous resident of the 17 Mile Drive, the Lone Cypress, probably one of the most photographed tree on the planet (and better than by me).
The Pacific coast is just a jewel for the eyes, we can't tire of it. But, a little frustrated, we decided that our next vacation was going to be somewhere we can swim in the ocean too...

Random highlights of the day

Obama's speech, as inspiring as his other speeches. Now if only the votes could follow, for once...
And also things I found
on the Facebook page of a "friend" (see, sometime FB is useful): this link,
on the Stanford post-docs mailing list: this email.
Subject: [BIO] Mongolian gerbil poop
Yep, I have reached a new high in my scientific career, begging for poop.
I just need a fresh pellet of an uninfected Taconic Mongolian gerbil for some microbiota work I'm doing. That would be awesome if you could give me crap.
and in my mailbox: this picture, taken by a parent at daycare.
