Little K.*

Erreur.

Le plan initial:
1 - Acheter les billets rapidement après sa naissance;
2 - Obtenir le certificat de naissance en "mode accéléré", soit 10 jours (sinon, ça peut prendre jusqu'à 6 semaines): facile, d'après le site du Département de la Santé, il suffit de leur passer un coup de fil;

So we're leaving for France in about 10 days, when La Poulette will be 6 weeks-old. We did the same thing with Tipoulet, and honestly, it's super easy to travel with little ones like that. They sleep anywhere, all the time, and they don't care about the jetlag since they don't sleep through the night anyway (unless you're pretty darn lucky). No, trouble happens mostly before we travel.
Because we need to get the baby's passport in less than 6 weeks. Again, for Tipoulet it went pretty smoothly, so we weren't really worried. Big mistake.
The initial plan was:
1- Buy the airplane tickets shortly after she's born;
2- Get the birth certificate "expedited", in about 10 days (otherwise, it can take up to 6 weeks): easy, the Health Department website says to just give them a phone call;
3- Get the passport done, once again "expedited" in 2 to 4 weeks
It all seemed reasonable, right ?
Well almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong...
1- So for the airplane ticket, it started off pretty well, as I said, since we got them for cheaper than we expected... Air France was supposed to mail me the paper ticket for La Poulette (no e-ticket for children younger than 2).
2 - So I call the Health Department a few days after she was born, and after 20 minutes navigating the automatic recording, I finally get a real lady:

Me: "Hi, I'd like to get the birth certificate for my daughter expedited, please."
Lady: "Oh, well, I'm sorry, but I can't do anything. You should have told the hospital."
Me: "Really? But on your website, it says to call you. And nobody told me anything in the hospital."
Lady: "Ah... Well, no, there's nothing we can do."
Me: "But it's impossible, we're traveling in 6 weeks and we absolutely need the certificate."
Lady: "Alright, I'll see what I can do. Leave us your phone number, and we'll call you when it's ready. Don't hesitate to call to check on it every week."
In summary: I got it in 4 weeks, which is not that bad after all, or at least we weren't completely doomed yet...
3 - Well, here the plan had to change, since we only had 2 weeks left. And I had seen that if you need a passport within 2 weeks, you can go to the Passport Agency in San Francisco to get it right away, as long as you provide a proof of travel. But I hadn't gotten anything yet from Air France. Back to 1- then.

Me: "Hi, I'm calling because I still haven't received the paper ticket for my baby for a San Francisco-Paris trip."
Air France dude: "Oh, but it was mailed on June 9th."
Me: "Really ? No, I haven't gotten anything."
Dude: "Let me go check."
.....
Dude: "Madame, I'm so sorry, it looks like it was never sent out, there was a problem with the billing address."
Me: "Seriously?!!?! But mine worked though! And how come I wasn't told there was a problem?!?!"

I'll spare you the rest, bottom line is: I went to the airport desk directly to pay and get the ticket. Phew. We have a proof of travel now. Back to 3 -.
So here we are, 12 days before our departure, on June 28th (take note, it's important for later). So I call the automated phone line of the passport agency (or APLPA).

APLPA: "If you are traveling in more than 14 days, hang up."
...
APLPA: "To know the next available appointment, press 1."
Me: "1."
APLPA: "June... 29th."
Me: "WTF?!?!?"
APLPA: "To speak to a representative, press 3."
Me: "3."
Representative: "Hi, how may I help you?"
Me: "Hi, I'd like to make an appointment at the San Francisco agency, but the next available appointment is on the 29th, and we're traveling on the 28th..."
Representative: "OK. Just keep calling this number until you get an appointment or the 21st."
Me, confused: "I keep calling??... Until the 21st??..."
Representative, as if I'm retarded: "That's it."
Me: "Every day ?"
Representative: "Every day, as many times as you'd like."
Me, very confused: "I see, ok, well, euh, thanks, bye."
So in summary, I suspect that on the 21st (7 days before our departure), they'll be able to bypass APLPA and book an appointment for me. If not, then I'll just go to the agency without an appointment, I guess...
To be continued on the 21st.

Built-in baby monitor

So I told you that La Poulette slept really well at night. But unfortunately, we don't. Because she sleeps in our bed, and she makes a lot of noises. Especially in the 45 minutes to an hour before she wakes up.
Well, don't put her in your bed, then, you'll tell me. Except that if we put her in her crib instead, we need to walk to her every time we hear her and think she's waking up. But most of the time, she sleeps soundly. So it's just easier to have her close by... We just switch on a candela, and go back to sleep right way.
Here is a little recording, so that you don't think I'm exaggerating.
I think it's getting better, though: either we're getting used to it, or we're already too sleep-deprived to hear anything...

Boarding to Paris

hop, on décolle !...

Actually, not quite yet, but soon ! We even managed to get seats on the same plane as Tipoulet and P in the end, and for $1500 - prices went down again 2 weeks ago, unbelievable ! They must have had a hard time filling up the A380. Tipoulet is obsessed with airplanes right now, he tells anyone who would listen that we'll take one to go to Paris, and he even offered one of his teachers to come with us... Indeed, a few of his grand-parents very wisely got him airplane toys as birthday presents. So here we are, the whole Chicken Playmobil (not that well-known in the US, but among our favorite toys when we were kids) family boarding to Paris. From left to right, La poulette, Tipoulet, yours truly and P (represented by a german flight attendant straight out of the '70s figure). We're all seated, and after Papa goes potty, hop, we're taking off !...
PS yes, the pictures are from before the haircut...

Snip it !

Did you notice, Tipoulet just got a haircut ? And in addition to looking handsome, he got a "bleue lollipop"...

The arm junkie

Two days after she was born, I was already calling La Poulette "Miss Arms". My mom, commenting that it was a bit early to tell and that we were going to "spoil her", saw it for herself when she cam to visit.
This little one just doesn't want to be put down in her crib. Or on our bed. Or anywhere, for that matter.
She'll fall asleep very easily in our arms, but will wake up within 5 minutes if we lay her down. And then will fall back asleep immediately when we take her back...
The only position that tricks her is on a pillow, it must feel like a shoulder, who knows...
Fortunately, at night, it's an entirely different story, she falls asleep like a charm...
It's funny how even this small, each child already has a mind of its own... Tipoulet always liked to sleep in his bed better than in our arms, but we wore out the hardwood floors trying to put him to sleep...

Quiet time

Tac !

* qui a besoin d'un transat-vibrant, sérieusement ?

How do you get a moment of peace with a newborn and 3-year old boy at home ? Well, very simple in fact, you put the big boy in front of the computer playing Go Diego, while he bounces the little one next to him. Check !
* who needs a vibrating bouncer anyway ?

My little hamster

Left, Tipoulet, and right, La Poulette, both of them at 3 weeks

À la naissance - At birth

In my aunt's arms (cousin A is in my mom's arms)

La Poulette had an appointment with the pediatrician yesterday.
In summary:
height: 20.5 in, 43rd percentile
weight: 8 lb 10 oz, 46th percentile
Two days after birth, she was 6 lb 4 oz (11th percentile). But again, it's been pretty much open bar for the last 3 weeks, since La Poulette is hungry when she wakes up (of course) and likes to nurse to sleep as well... Since she spends most of her time waking up and falling asleep, of course, we're talking about a lot of calories going in.
So, let's continue with the photo parallel with her brother.
There is a family resemblance, for sure... Mamina also found some pictures of me as a baby, and she seems to take after my side. At least there's no doubt she inherited my long toes... But it looks like she'll have blue eyes, like her dad and big brother...
