Sugared-out

Thank you. Happy Halloween!".

Well, the trick-or-treating was pretty successful : Tipoulet got three pounds of candy!
I thought I was going to take him "Trick-or-treat" to two or three neighbors houses before nightfall, but an hour and a half later, he was still there running from one to the next. Tipoulet understood the rules of the game very quickly : if there is a pumpkin on the porch and the lights on, you can get candy, otherwise you just keep going. He went from house to house with a bag getting heavier and heavier, repeating almost every time (sometimes with some prompting) "Trick-or-treat! Thank you. Happy Halloween". He had a blast.
And what's more unexpected, I really had fun too. It's too bad I didn't have my camera with me because some houses were really worth a look! The craziest one had a fake dude hung on the porch! And I loved the "community" feel : the vast majority of people had made sure to be at home to wait for the "Trick-or-treaters," and those who were not at home often had left a basket full of sweets for them to help themselves.

Now we'll see who is going to eat all that candy... (I already spotted some KitKat Halloween).

Happy Halloween !

Joyeux Hallowen !

We took a little head-start with Halloween yesterday by going to "Trick-or-treat" on California Avenue. It was very nice and Tipoulet got tons of candy ...
We were also on "snack-duty" at his daycare this afternoon, so we prepared special Halloween treats : this, that, and some cookies ... I hope they'll like them, otherwise they will be starving ...
And tonight, we're putting our costumes back on to knock on a few doors in our neighborhood !
Happy Halloween !

One only lends money to the rich*

I just got a copy of our 'credit report' last week.
First, what is a 'credit report'? It's basically a report containing all information about your history as a borrower (or 'credit history'), collected by the credit bureaus: how many credit cards you have, with which banks, how much you charge each month and how much you pay, do you have a car loan, or a mortgage, do you owe money to taxes, or to your dentist, and so on.
And how is a credit report useful ? Well, for many things. To get a cell phone, or a credit card, for example. The better you pay your debts, the more people will lend you money. And vice versa. Which we learned the hard way, since when we arrived in the US from abroad, we had no credit history. And here, you are presumed guilty until your innocence is proven. No credit history = bad 'credit history'. In France, it works pretty much the other way around: if the banks find your name in their system, it means you have caused them trouble ... In France, you are presumed innocent until you're proven guilty.
And finally, a good 'credit report' is needed to obtain good rates on loans, something we care more particularly about these days (I will probably get back to that at some point). And so I was pleased to see that both P and I have excellent 'credit scores'. All these years I spent taking care of all our credit cards paid off! I shouldn't brag too much about it, paying your bills on time is not hard when you have enough money...
But, I was less happy to see that:
In summary we're doing great, except for the fact that we haven't been in the US long enough... And there's not much I can do to improve that... Oh, and the fourth reason that lowers P's score: too many accounts with balances. When he uses only two credit cards, just like me. And when they think that I, on the other hand, am not using enough of them... Go figure.

Lost in translation, again

Conversation (in french) at dinner yesterday.
Tipoulet: "Me, when I'll be big, big, big, I will have blue chevals*..."
P, interrupting: "Chevaux**, Loulou, when there's only one, you say 'cheval', but when there's two, three..."
Tipoulet, interrupting as well: "No, no, no. CHEVALS. SHOVELS from the sandbox, to make piles of sand.***"

And it's only the beginning.
* 'cheval' is the singular for 'horse'
** 'chevaux' (pronounce shovo) is the plural for 'horses'

The Pumpkin Patch

With Halloween just around the corner, we went to our first pumpkin patch 8 days ago. Actually, it was not a real big pumpkin patch (most pumpkins are shipped from Half Moon Bay), but for a 3 year old, it was perfect and it had the advantage of being only a 10-minutes drive away (instead of an hour).
And let's be honest, Tipoulet's favorite thing was the bouncy castle anyway ...
Once Tipoulet came out of said bouncy castle, we were finally able to do more fun things (and more photogenic things too).
Like check out the actual pumpkins,
take a pony ride,
and go pet the animals.
Unfortunately we missed the hayride, which seems pretty popular ...
So, and because we had a really good time, we went back there yesterday. Our friend K met us there with her daughter AM, who is the same age as Tipoulet.
The little ones seemed to enjoy it again.
And in place of a hayride (sold-out again) they were treated to a wagon ride.

I'll end the post with pictures of some of the beautiful pumpkins,
and of our family picnic there.

So much to say, so little time...

Et demain, La Poulette a 5 mois. Je le crois pas ...

And tomorrow La Poulette is turning 5 month-old. I can't believe it ...

The little Dude

"Hey guys!... What are you doing? Have you seen a baseball game before ?"

"That's just my mom..."
["C'est juste ma maman..."]

This morning, while I was dropping Tipoulet off at daycare, he saw a group of his buddies and rushed to join them.
"Hey guys! ... What are you doing? Have you seen a baseball game before?"
The question about the baseball game probably came from the fact that he was wearing his T-shirt with a football helmet. Since he has actually never seen a football or a baseball game. Obviously.
Since he seemed pretty engaged in the conversation, I give him a kiss before leaving. He totally ignores me, so I start leaving, and two seconds later, I hear my little 3 year-old
boy tell his buddies, with a blasé attitude.
"That's just my mom ..."
