Sick TV ads

The U.S. health care system should be reformed by the end of the year. There is much to say about the differences between France and the United States, but for today, I will mention one: the fact that in the US, pharmaceutical companies can run direct-to-consumers advertisements for their products. This is forbidden in France for drugs reimbursed by the government (the Sécurité Sociale, aka la Sécu). What looks like a commercial for the latest Dior mascara to us French, in fact praises the merits of a drug supposed to improve the growth of scarce eyelashes. The manufacturer even informs us that it is indeed a disease, called hypotrichosis. To limit unnecessary healthcare spending caused by the demands of patients self-diagnosed with the help of these TV spots (and also to avoid public health problems due to potential side effects of drugs newly released on the market), legislators are talking about regulating such ads more strictly. Anyway, and fortunately, we don't have TV ...

Chores

A Tipoulet (1) increases the amount of clothes that need to be folded, and (2) decreases the time available to fold clothes. On the bright side, our laundry basket is only half-full.

Gourmet week-end

- des macarons (citron, framboise et vanille; faits-maison, sans me jeter de fleurs, pour la baby-shower d'un étudiant du labo);

- un barbecue créole (salade de chou, salade de pommes de terre, poulet créole, tarte au citron), auquel Tipoulet a fait honneur, malgré le fait qu'il avait déjeuné une heure avant;

- des pains au chocolat;

It's been, what, three weeks since we last talked food? So, last week-end, on Tipoulet's menu were: home-made french macarons (lemon, raspberry and vanilla; I made them for the baby-shower of one of our lab members), a carribean barbecue (coleslaw, potato salad, jerk chicken and key lime pie) that Tipoulet loved despite the fact that he had had lunch an hour before, chocolate croissants and more. We haven't come across anything that he doesn't like yet! On the program as well, a lot of outdoor, between the barbecue and the playground.

Sliding with attitude

When my mom, Mamina, was here to take care of Tipoulet last June, she always told me that he was afraid of going down the slide, and that he would just instead fall into her arms from the top of the playground structure. One day, however, she mentioned en passant that maybe he was just reacting to her own fear, since she has vertigo when standing on a stool... And she was probably right! Because since she left, I haven't seen Tipoulet being scared of the slide, to say the least...

Pharmaceuticals

We're fighting the cold with herbs, tylenol... and MOUCHE-BÉBÉ!!! Such an awesome thing, it is THE absolutely necessary item when you've got a baby with a cold at home... It came from France, because strangely, you can't find it in the US. It's a mystery, actually, because it's made by Novartis, not exactly your Mom and Pop store that doesn't do export... And the fight is going well, because Tipoulet's clearly getting better!

Cold #2

Tipoulet's sick. For the second time. A pretty bad cold. But he seems to be doing ok, apart from the wakings in the middle of the night... We're trying to get him to be better with infused aromatic herbs, steamed in our french "cocotte-minute" (pressure cooker), and tylenol.

Peekaboo Barn

We got the iPhone for this app. And for the GPS. And to show off, as well. But mostly, mostly, for this app, Peekaboo Barn. Tipoulet loves it, and usually asks for it everyday. Each animal hides inside the barn, and you have to touch the screen to open the doors and hear the animal's sound. Because there are 10 animals appearing one at a time, and they take their sweet time, I made a little selection of the best scenes from our original video... It's only available in anglais and in espagnol, but to the french crowd, I'd say animals sounds are animals sounds... At $1.99 (hum well, not including the iPhone), it's an excellent investment for all the parents of little ones (below the 40 in. bar, I'd say).
